Locust, NC: Small-Town Life in Stanly County

Locust, NC, sits on the western edge of Stanly County and wears its nickname proudly: “The City with a Soul.” The pace is easy, the calendar is full, and Charlotte access stays convenient.  This area is booming for its location and schools.

Rooted in Stanly County History

Locust began as “The Crossroads,” later taking its name from a locust tree that locals used as a meeting point. Today, the Locust Historical Society & Museum shares the story of how this Stanly County town grew while preserving its neighborly character

City Park and Community Traditions

Locust City Park anchors the community: trails, sports fields, playgrounds, and seasonal concerts all bring residents together. From April through October, the free Movie Night Series behind City Hall draws families with blankets and lawn chairs. Tip: bring your lawn chairs and water bottles, and be ready to relax and enjoy the vendors.  Follow them on social media so you know when all their events are!

Oakboro NC: Small-Town Heart of Stanly County

October 6, 2025 by Danielle Edwards

Oakboro, NC: Small-Town Heart of Stanly County

Oakboro, NC, nestled in the center of Stanly County, is a town where community truly comes first. Known for its July 4th celebration, classic car cruise-ins, and Friday night lights, Oakboro blends history with neighborly living. It is like going back in time to realize maybe you don’t need the Starbucks and Target 5 minutes away.

History and Traditions

Founded in the early 1900s, Oakboro has kept its history alive through annual festivals and community traditions. The Oakboro July 4th Celebration is one of the longest-running Independence Day events in North Carolina, featuring parades, fireworks, and a sense of hometown pride. “Every year, people come from all over the Charlotte region for this parade. Where else can you see the old Mayberry police car, a line-up of tractors, 25 beauty queens, and a lady riding a cow?” said Danielle Edwards.

Events that Define Oakboro

  • Oakboro Cruise-In: A monthly classic car show that turns Main Street into a rolling history lesson.
  • Oakboro July 4th Festival: A full week of parades, pageants, rides, and fireworks.
  • Oakboro Music and Parades: From Christmas to Veterans Day, Oakboro knows how to fill a calendar.

The July 4th fireworks go off at 11 pm because the carnival is the main attraction and fundraiser for the fire department. Check out the annual July 4th schedule online and plan your family fun.

Parks and Outdoor Spaces

The Oakboro District Park offers ballfields, workout stations, playgrounds, and an impressive competition-level disc golf course, making it a hub for families and weekend activities.

“The best part is you have the park all to yourself and rarely see anyone! Getting lost in the tall pine trees, to spotting turtles in the pond is always our favorite.” – Danielle Edwards

Real Estate in Oakboro

Homes in Oakboro range from historic houses with front porches to newer builds with modern layouts. With space, affordability, and strong community ties, Oakboro appeals to first-time buyers, growing families, and retirees. Big builders like True Homes and Smith Douglas continue to develop here. Coming up is the annex to Oaks at St. Martin. In this community, you will be able to walk to Main St. and Food Lion!

Why People Choose Oakboro

Oakboro isn’t just a stop on the map—it’s a way of life. Festivals, family ties, and a safe, small-town feel make it stand out in Stanly County. Whether you’re walking in the parade, catching up at the Cruise-In, or enjoying quiet evenings on the porch, Oakboro offers a rhythm of life that’s hard to match. “It feels like you are going back 50 years, and I think it helps you realize what is most important.”

Exploring Oakboro for Yourself

The best way to see Oakboro is to spend a Friday at the Cruise-In or a week in July during the festival. If small-town roots and a strong sense of community matter to you, Oakboro deserves a spot on your short list. For me, it’s the parades—every float feels like a personal invitation to belong.
