Welcome to Albemarle, North Carolina, a charming town filled with history, character, and a few stories that might send a shiver down your spine.
One of Albemarle’s most historic landmarks is the Old Albemarle Opera House, located above Starnes Jewelers, one of the city’s oldest businesses. Once a place for entertainment and community gatherings, the old opera house is now a fascinating reminder of Albemarle’s past.
But history isn’t the only thing surrounding this building.
According to local stories, the opera house is believed to have some supernatural activity. There are also stories connecting the building to the 1917 Spanish flu pandemic, when it was reportedly used to store coffins and bodies temporarily while they awaited transportation to funeral homes.
Today, the historic space is in need of major restoration, with an estimated $3 million needed to bring the old opera house back to life.
